Group work
Similar to what we are doing now, I think blogs could be beneficial with group work discussions. I would have each group utilize one blog central locationmeaning if my group members just posted on my site. For me, this keeps things organized and not overwhelming. Checking multiple locations is kind of annoying. I would probably assign a blog leader who could be in charge of flagging any comments that may be inappropriate or unclear. The rest of the group could discuss a projects details, post their progress, questions, or links. Now that I'm writing about it I'm not sure why they wouldn't just talk about in class and I don't like to assign outside work that requires computers or internet. A lot of my students are on free or reduced lunch so I doubt internet access is available. However, this could be used for students out on home and hospital, etc. They could be their own group and communicate via blogs.

I really like the idea in your class of having a central location for group members to post. After setting up the RSS feed on this blog, it made it a lot easier to navigate through webpages and read blog posts. I find that on WebTycho information is often scattered everywhere and it is not user friendly. Knowing that I struggle as an adult navigating, I am sure it will be A LOT harder for younger students to keep track of their assignments.
ReplyDelete"Checking multiple locations is kind of annoying." You said this perfectly! There needs to be a central location for online discussions so that there is no confusion or misinterpretation of where to find information or who you should be discussing with.
ReplyDeleteEven if the students are only using the blog in class, it can still be valuable. If the group progress and notes and things are there, they won't be lost, and the students can always revisit what it was they were doing. Also, students that have a flash of inspiration can put there ideas somewhere where the rest of the groupo can have access.
ReplyDeleteSince I'm not the only one who isn't a huge fan of webtycho... Why do you think it hasnt improved? Some info goes to whatever email you have on file, now we have a umuc email account, some is in the private message section, group work may go to any 3 I already mentioned and/or the study group conference section or whatever is under that (can't remember at the moment) and there's usually a class conference section for group work. I absolutely dread logging onto webtycho bc I know at least 20 minutes will be wasted just trying to find what I need.
ReplyDeleteFortunately, I use my experience with webtycho to help how I set up my class info online. I don't want students to log on and feel overwhelmed so I try to make it as user friendly as possible.
What would you eliminate from webtycho to make it more user friendly?
